Seven alleged individuals of German left-wing extremist organization stand trial over series of violent incidents

Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on Tuesday, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Earlier this month, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist group along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany claim the network was behind attacks on sites in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some severely injured.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, around an yearly gathering called the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and urged the German administration to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The danger from the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have already been convicted or remain detained.”
