The United States central bank cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction this year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.
The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.
Private Data Indicate Continued Decline
Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise
Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that costs are rising, although gradually. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
