Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
